Help VFW ‘Return the Favor’

KANSAS CITY, Mo., June 1, 2010 – the VFW Foundation is in the running to receive a $250,000 “Pepsi Refresh” grant.

But it all depends on you. Won’t you help us win?

Beginning today, please visit www.refresheverything.com/ReturnTheFavor and vote!

Your vote for the VFW Foundation’s “Return the Favor” project will support the unmet needs of U.S. military personnel and their families. For example, since 2004, the VFW Foundation has provided over $3,400,000 in direct free financial assistance to military families in urgent financial circumstances for rent, mortgage, utilities, vehicle repair, medical expenses and food/basic aid. In many instances, or intervention has stopped evictions and foreclosures. We constantly hold “welcome home” and “send off” events for troops to boost morale. We’ve distributed 10,000,000 long distance telephone cards and we pay for innovative Internet “Free Call Days” so our brave troops in Iraq and Afghanistan can call home on a regular basis.

You can vote once a day during the month of June.

The two organizations that receive the most votes win.

Tell friends and family, forward this to everyone you know.

Won’t you take a few seconds to show our troops and those they love how much our nation appreciates their service and sacrifice? They are counting on you, please don’t let them down!

“They have done so much for us…Now let’s Return the Favor”

VFW Demands an Apology From Blumenthal

If you haven’t been following the ridiculous debacle surrounding Connecticut’s state Attorney General Richard Blumenthal claiming he “misspoke” when he -repeatedly – claimed to be a Vietnam Veteran, you can catch up on numerous news sites.

But the word from our National HQ is this:

ROCKY HILL, Conn., May 21, 2010 — The department commander of Connecticut’s largest war veterans’ organization is demanding an apology from state Attorney General Richard Blumenthal for claiming he was a Vietnam veteran when he is not.

“Only those who served in Vietnam or offshore or in neighboring countries can rightfully call themselves a Vietnam veteran,” said Richard G. DiFederico, department commander for the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S.

“Mr. Blumenthal is not a Vietnam veteran, and whether he misspoke, was misquoted or regrets that some people believed he was a veteran of that war is not the issue,” said DiFederico, of Oakville. “The issue is about the top law enforcement officer in my state — someone whose very position requires higher standards of personal integrity and accountability — who won’t apologize to those he has deeply offended.”

Press reports earlier this week confirmed that Blumenthal, a Vietnam Era veteran who served honorably in the Marine Corps Reserve, alluded to being a Vietnam veteran on several public occasions. He is currently running as a democratic candidate to replace retiring U.S. Sen. Christopher Dodd (D-Conn.).

On Tuesday, the West Hartford mayor arranged for the democratic campaign committee to rent the meeting hall inside VFW Post 9929 for a press conference, which at the time many believed was the perfect venue for Blumenthal to issue a public apology to all Vietnam veterans. Instead of apologizing, he became defiant, and launched into full campaign mode to defend his record as a public servant.

“This issue isn’t about Mr. Blumenthal’s great service to the state’s veteran and military population, it’s about him refusing to apologize for claiming to be something he is not,” said DiFederico, who served in the Navy as a member of the 1983 multinational peacekeeping force in Beirut, Lebanon.

The VFW department commander said Blumenthal needs to apologize to the 3.4 million servicemen and women who served honorably in Southeast Asia, as well as to 5.3 million Vietnam Era veterans who served honorably elsewhere. But ultimately, DiFederico said, Blumenthal must apologize to Connecticut’s quarter-million veterans, military and their family members.

“The attorney general was considered one of the best friends a veteran could have in our state. It is a true shame that he let a false claim of Vietnam service change all that.”

T-Shirts From Our Adopted Unit!

We have the chance to purchase t-shirts from our adopted unit, the 1185th DDSB.

The back of the shirts
The back of the shirts

We’ve been given a tentative price of $15 per shirt. But if you want to help and don’t need a shirt of your own, you can also donate to the t-shirt fund to buy t-shirts for the needier family members. This is another great way to support the soldiers and families if you haven’t been able to get to any of our other events!

If you’re interested, please contact Shawn Williams via email or by phone (717-799-0991).

DOG SITTER SOUGHT!

Are you looking for some adorable company for a brief period of time? One of our adopted soldiers is returning home in June and needs a pet sitter for two weeks as he and his wife go on a cruise! While they’re gone, they’re looking for a responsible, loving person to take care of Chloe for a little over a week.
Chloe loves to cuddle! She is a small, friendly dog
Chloe is a wonderful little dog but does best with no other pets around. She is a Boston Terrier and weighs 20 pounds. She loves belly rubs and snuggling next to people and to sleep under the covers (and really, who doesn’t?)! But she is a crate trained and can be left alone for up to a normal business day and can sleep in it if she has to. She loves to play ball; she is obsessed with fetching!

This would be a great opportunity for a child that wants to prove they’re up to the task of getting their own pet, or just someone that would like to help out one of our adopted soldier’s families!

This would be for June 12th through the 20th. If you’re interested, please email webmaster@vfwpost7294.org.
