Sally Greth sent this in – it’s a great way to support our troops and will only take a minute!

If you go to this web site, www.LetsSayThanks.com you can pick out a thank you card and Xerox will print it and it will be sent to a soldier that is currently serving in Iraq/Afghanistan. You can’t pick out who gets it, but it will go to a member of the armed services.

How AMAZING it would be if we could get everyone we know to send one!!! It is FREE and it only takes a second.

Please take the time to pass it on for others. We can never say ‘thank you’ enough. Our soldiers need to know we are behind them.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if the soldiers received a bunch of these?

Peg SchopfMargaret G. (Peg) Shopf, 90, of Miami, FL, formerly of N. Prince St., Millersville, passed away peacefully at Jackson North Hospital, Miami, FL, on Wednesday, December 1, 2010. Born on July 16, 1920 in Lancaster to the late Edward M. and Florence Schmidt Garnet, she was married for 50 years to Willis L. Shopf, who preceded her in death January 3, 2002. Peg graduated from Strasburg High School, class of 1940. A homemaker most of her life, she worked from 1968 to 1980 at the Millersville University Bookstore. She was a lifetime member of Millersville VFW Post 7294 Women’s Auxiliary. Survived by two sons, Scott of Hollywood, FL & Ward, husband of Diane (Denlinger), of Gloveland, FL; daughters, Sheila, wife of Gregory Arnold, of Landisville, Fay, wife of Jarry Miller, of Millersville; eight grandchildren; three great-grandsons; and niece, Louise, wife of Dave Williamson, of Heathrow, FL. Last of her immediate family, Peg was preceded in death by sister, Jane Hartye, and brother, Edward Garnet, Sr.

Funeral Services and Interment in Florida will be at the convenience of the family. The family is also planning a Celebration of Peg’s Life to be held in Pennsylvania. For further details, contact scottshopf@aol.com.

We’ve got a lot of exciting events happening at the Post over the holidays! As always, you can check the calendar for a full list, but here’s a quick breakdown:

Wednesday, November 24, 2010: Black Wednesday! DJ Becky Williams will be spinning the tunes, including karaoke for those brave souls daring enough to flex their musical muscles! 8pm – Midnight!

Sunday, December 19, 2010: Post Christmas Party 12PM to 2PM. Help us give the children of our post a Christmas to remember! Bring them in for a FREE PRESENT from Santa, along with games and activities to get them in the holiday mood (not that they’ll need any encouragement!). We will be providing food, drink, games and presents for all the children (12 & under, please!). PLEASE SIGN UP! Last year we had to cancel the party because of a lack of interest – this is a chance for fun and FREE PRESENTS for your kids/grandkids! There’s no reason to miss out on it!

Friday, December 24, 2010: Christmas Party! 12 to 6 PM Free drinks with light fare from 4PM to 6PM! Join us for our annual Christmas celebration!

VFW Reaching Out To Younger Members

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution wrote an interesting article about the VFW reaching out to younger vets:

Joshua Musser turned 19 while enduring the Marine Corps’ famed boot camp at Parris Island, S.C. By the time he was 20, the Lawrenceville resident was fighting in the streets of Fallujah.

An artillery specialist, Musser lost hearing in his left ear from the big guns’ blasts during that 2004 battle, considered the bloodiest of the Iraq War. He sustained a serious head injury fleeing a missile. And he saw things that haunt him still: body parts lying on the ground, headless children. Musser returned with post-traumatic stress syndrome, or PTSD.

“When I got home, I was really screwed up,” unable to sleep and stricken with panic attacks, said Musser. “I could have just stayed in my room and never gone out.”

Compounding his problems: Musser was having trouble getting the care he needed from the Veterans Administration. He contacted the office of his congressman, Rep. John Linder, asking for help. A Linder staffer who promised to direct him to treatment also suggested he contact the VFW.

On a Saturday afternoon five years ago, Musser walked into Post 5255 in Lawrenceville, unsure of what to expect. “I thought it would be a bingo hall,” he said.

Instead, said Musser, it was his salvation.

Men with lined faces looked up. Veterans from World War II, Korea and Vietnam, the men listened to the young one recount his war – with the enemy, with his memories. As he talked, Musser relaxed. His hosts may have been older, he knew, but they shared a bond.

“It was the most incredible moment of my life,” said Musser, who credits the post with helping him keep PTSD in check. “It made me realize I had a place to go. I knew this would be a healthy place for me.”
